Summary

The following is a transcript of the act, introduced by Illinois Senator Stephen Douglas, officially titled “An Act to Organize the Territories of Nebraska and Kansas.” The act repealed the Missouri Compromise and divided the land west of Missouri into two territories, the citizens of which would determine through popular vote whether or not to legalize slavery. The opponents of the Kansas-Nebraska act founded the Republican party, and the conflict that resulted in the territories moved the United States closer to Civil War.
